Content to include three main texts and numerous assigned articles on the nature of spiritual direction, how it differs from counseling, desires in Ignatian tradition, discernment, resistance, listening skills, fostering a contemplative attitude and helping people notice key interior movements. There will be much work in triads to develop listening skills and self-confidence in the art of spiritual direction.

Year 2 - 2023-2024

Sessions will focus on:
• Advanced topics in spiritual direction
• Group supervision
• Individual supervision with an experienced
spiritual director
• Verbatims of actual sessions with directees
• Proper use of sacred scripture
• Various formats of giving the Spiritual Exercises
• Opportunity to direct Ignatian retreat under supervision

Director

The Internship will be led by Fr. Paul Macke, SJ along with Fr. Richard Bollman, SJ, Marc Greenberg, Todd Long, Mary Anne Reese, Fran Repka, RSM, Donna Steffen, SC, Fr. Bob Thesing, SJ, and other trained Spiritual Directors.

Fr. Paul Macke, SJ

Fr. Paul Macke, SJ is the Jesuit Mission Coordinator at the Jesuit Spiritual Center at Milford. Previously, he served 7 years as Executive Director of Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House just outside Chicago. He is well-experienced in retreat ministry, having served in pastoral ministry in Alaska for 17 years. Following his years in Alaska, he was appointed Secretary for Pastoral Ministries and Jesuit Life for the Jesuit Conference of the United States in Washington, DC. He holds an MA in counseling and D.Min. in pastoral psychotherapy.

Applicant Qualifications

Men and Women 30+ years of age
Preference for those with a background in ministry, theology, counseling or related field
i.e. experience in teaching, helping profession
Able to thrive in group learning environment
Able to be vulnerable in both individual and group supervision
Participate in spiritual direction throughout the internship
Make a Retreat in Everyday Life (19th Annotation) or 7-day Privately Directed Retreat
(both Ignatian retreats) by the end of year one
Commitment to attend all of the sessions
Ability to attract and retain directees
Willingness to take classes in Sacred Scripture and Theology, if needed
Commitment to read and complete assignments
Must purchase main text books (supplemental resources will be sent electronically)
Complete application with a $50 non-refundable application fee
Interview with members of the core staff
Submit two letters of reference
Prior to seeing directees, must be AoC Safe Environment trained along with a background and fingerprint check
